Our outing to the Pfaffenwinkel starts off quite kindly. Along the Forggensee and the Lech, we get to Lechbruck and then Steingaden. Beyond Steingaden we ignore the turn-off to the Wies Pilgrimage Church and continue deeper into the Pfaffenwinkel. It is only in Peißenberg, beneath the Hohe Peißenberg, that the easy rolling comes to an end. The climb to the Hohe Peißenberg begins, on a narrow, quiet road. First through a small wood, then over open ground, we continue the approach to the summit and the church on the Hohe Peißenberg. At the top, on a fine day, we can enjoy the view far out over the countryside, before steaming downhill towards Schongau. This pretty little village is ideal for a break. Now we take it easy again as far as Bernbeuern. But this section also comes to an end when we hit the ascent of the Auerberg. At over 1000 m, there is a small chapel at the end of the ascent before we continue on over the undulating terrain.. In Roßhaupten we face the final, brief, tough climb up to Ussenburg. The ascent is worth it, because from the top we have a breathtaking view of the Forggensee, the mountains beyond, and Neuschwanstein Castle. With this view, we conclude our excursion and roll back into Füssen.
