On day three we ride over the Vorder Höhi into the Toggenburg and thus enter the Rhine Valley. After Chur, the Lenzerheide Pass rounds off the day.
We don't face a particularly long stage today, but it feels long because we penetrate deep into the Rhaetian Alps. Firstly, though, we finish off what we started yesterday. Our mountaintop finish in Arvenbüel was, in fact, the first part of the Vorder Höhi – an almost unknown pass that crosses over the Churfirsten range into the Toggenburg. And it's hard to know what's tougher on the head and legs - the relatively steep climb or the challenging descent on a narrow, bumpy road. Either way, we reach the Toggenburg, where a few more metres elevation need to be gained up to Wildhaus before we drop into the broad valley of the Rhine. So a completely different world, and we turn south and pick up speed on the flat. We even ride a couple of kilometres through Liechtenstein, and a small hill adds a bit of variety. The Rhine Valley then gets ever more narrow, and we arrive in Chur. We still have the Lenzerheide Pass, the longest climb of the day, before we end the stage in Tiefencastel.Option:
Shortly before our destination in Tiefencastel a wonderful, barren dead-end road could tempt you up the Alp Lavoz. This would bring the stage total up to 119 kms / 2750 m EG.
